Art Is Stupid: Random T-Shirts of Stupidity

I am sure some will be incensed, if not dowright pissed, by the title of this Web site. But, truly, art is stupid! The quote, "Art is stupid...Everything one sees is false...Thought is produced in the mouth." comes from Tristan Tzara, a Rumanian poet who wrote the Dada Manifesto in 1918 and is credited with naming the Dada movement. Being this is a Dada based thought, it is certainly open to interpretation. However, as I see and use it, it means that art (the artwork/art piece itself) is stupid in that it, as an entity, lacks the ability of common sense. Art does not have the ability to think or express its meaning/thoughts. It is the artist and the viewer(s) who interpret and express its meaning. Someone may look at the painting Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh and say, "What a lovely vase of flowers!" It is not, and that statement is, in fact, false. The entity is a painting, oil on canvas and nothing more. The viewer gives it meaning and thought and voices that verbally or in writing. In Sunflowers, you do not see sunflowers. You see canvas with colored oils spread on it. To proclaim otherwise means what one is seeing is false. The painting does not have thought, it is stupid. Thought is produced in the mouth (mind or writing hand) of the viewer. ArtIsStupid.com originated as a site for hardcore Dada and Surreal based t-shirts.
