Wings of Gold Open Edition Poster

Wings of Gold combines the use of both images and abstract art. This piece represents the chaos that life feels like and the seeming randomness of trials and tribulations that pop up. The airplane represents the vehicle ( the human body) used to navigate and solve those challenges. The gold color of the airplane means you have earned your wings and can now effectively navigate the random challenges of life toward your goals and the life you want to live, hence the title Wings of Gold. Spencer was also inspired by his cousin who successfully survived serving in the Military and flying an aircraft that crashed four times while she was serving, having earned her Wings of Gold.This piece was created by first sketching the P-38 Lightning onto watercolor paper. Once the sketch was complete, Spencer painted over it with masking fluid to protect the image as paint is poured over it during the acrylic pour process. To do the acrylic pour Spencer: 1. Layered all of the paint colors randomly into little cups, one on top of the other 2. Spencer attached his drawing to a “Cake Bake Turntable 3. Spencer dumped both cups of paints on top of his paper 4. Spencer gave the turntable a good hard spin over and over 5. Spencer repeated step three over and over as needed to cover the whole paper 6. Spencer used his hands and a palette knife to wipe away the excess paint in the area where he thought the airplane was drawn 7. He uncovered the whole airplane and left the painting to dry 8. Once dry, Spencer removed the masking fluid with an eraser 9. Spencer filled in the color of the airplane 10. Spencer touched up the paint as needed
