Throughout North America the Wolf is in peril not due to its inability to survive, but because of human-beings' inability to co-exist with these wilderness citizens. Misplaced fear has so-called hunters shooting these remarkable animals by the thousands. Many wolves are shot in the back by riflemen in planes or helicopters (hardly a sporting chance for the poor Wolf!). Often the wolves are killed and their young cubs are left to starve to death in the dens when their parents don't return, or they die out in the cold without a parent to protect them. Sarah Palin's shameful tenure as Alaska's Governor was further marred by her explicit approval of these cruel animal culling practices. Wolves are not interested in attacking or eating humans, they simply desire to be left in peace so they can range wilderness areas without being attacked by fearful armed hikers and hunters. Our few encounters are often due to us entering the Wolf's natural habitat areas, which they are actually very tolerant of, or by moving our newly-built housing developments beyond the suburbs and permanently into the Wolf's natural ranging zones. Encounters are inevitable, but almost all encounter problems arise when people overreact in the presence of a wolf. Let them be and they will not seek us out intent on causing us harm. Wolves to date only become aggressive when people act unpredicatbly and violently around them.
