The San Francisco cable car is one of the city’s most iconic and enduring symbols, offering both a historic ride and a practical way to explore its famously steep hills. The Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines start near Union Square and climb past Chinatown, Nob Hill, and Russian Hill, offering postcard views of the bay and Alcatraz. The California Street line, meanwhile, cuts a straight path through the Financial District and Nob Hill. At the cable car turnaround stations, passengers can watch conductors manually rotate the cars on wooden turntables—a charming bit of old-world engineering still in daily use.
