Robert E. Lee Poster

At the surrender ceremony of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia there was no time for a formal photograph. Within several days of that surrender, Robert E. Lee, including one of his sons and Colonel Taylor, his aide, sat for a photograph in front of the basement access to his apartment at 707 E. Franklin in Richmond, Virginia. This new photograph supplements the historic black and white image taken in 1865 by carefully removing Lee's son and Lee's aide from the image and colorizing Robert E. Lee to show in more detail what Lee may have looked like today. But more important, the viewer can see Lee's strength of character and personality, his keen-edged yet suspicious eye, his impeccable dress, and his passive, almost relaxed acceptance of the surrender a few days before. This photograph will give the viewer a new perspective of an existing, historic image. The image of the door in the back ground is a modern photograph of the same door that can be seen in the historic photograph at the Library of Congress. This image makes it look like Robert E.
