Gioia: This word comes from the Latin “gaudia,” meaning “joy” or “delight,” which in turn is derived from the Latin verb “gaudere,” meaning “to rejoice” or “to be glad.” In ancient Rome, expressions of “joy” were often related to religious rituals and celebrations, viewed as a gift from the gods closely linked to worship and gratitude; during the Middle Ages, the influence of Christian culture established “joy” as an essential part of faith, associated with the salvation of the soul and love for God; and in the Renaissance period, the rise of humanism diversified the understanding of joy, with artistic and literary works frequently exploring various human experiences, including joy.
