CHATEAU GAILLARD

Bâti par Richard Coeur de Lion, Château-Gaillard se dresse sur une falaise de calcaire, au-dessus de la Seine, près de la commune des Andelys. La construction, commencée en 1197, s’acheva moins de deux ans après. Ce qui fit dire au roi d’Angleterre et duc de Normandie (selon les commentateurs de l’époque) : « Comme elle est belle, ma fille d’un an ! ». Richard se serait également exclamé : « Quel château gaillard ! » Built by Richard Coeur de Lion, Château-Gaillard stands on a limestone cliff, above the Seine, near the town of Andelys. Construction, which began in 1197, was completed less than two years later. Which made the King of England and Duke of Normandy say (according to commentators at the time): "How beautiful, my one year old daughter! ". Richard would also have exclaimed: "What a cheerful castle!"
