Carte Postale Leshan Giant Buddha China Travel
The Leshan Giant Buddha, located in Sichuan Province, China, is the largest stone Buddha statue in the world, standing at 71 meters (233 feet) tall. Carved into the red sandstone cliffs at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu, and Qingyi Rivers, this massive statue was built during the Tang Dynasty (713–803 AD). It was commissioned by a Buddhist monk named Hai Tong, who believed that the Buddha’s presence would help calm the turbulent waters that had caused many boat accidents in the region. Remarkably, the statue’s design includes an advanced drainage system, which has helped preserve it for over 1,200 years, despite exposure to natural elements.
Today, the Leshan Giant Buddha is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s most awe-inspiring landmarks. Visitors can admire the colossal structure from viewing platforms or take a boat tour for a breathtaking perspective of the Buddha’s serene face and intricately carved robes. Surrounding the statue, the Mount Emei Scenic Area offers lush forests, ancient temples, and a rich Buddhist heritage, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Whether for its historical, spiritual, or architectural significance, the Leshan Giant Buddha remains a testament to ancient Chinese craftsmanship and devotion, drawing millions of visitors each year.
