Carte Postale Jerash Jordan Travel
Jerash, in northern Jordan, is one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy and offers a striking sense of how a provincial Roman metropolis once functioned. Known in antiquity as Gerasa, the city flourished under Roman rule from the 1st to the 3rd centuries CE, and its layout is still clearly legible today. Visitors enter through the monumental Hadrian’s Arch and move into a vast archaeological zone filled with colonnaded streets, temples, baths, and theaters. The Oval Plaza, framed by Ionic columns and backed by the Temple of Zeus, is especially memorable for its unusual shape and grand scale, designed to impress travelers arriving from the south.
Walking through Jerash feels immersive because so many structures remain standing and connected in sequence. The Cardo Maximus, a long colonnaded street still paved with original stone slabs, reveals the grooves left by ancient chariot wheels, while the North and South Theaters give insight into the city’s social and cultural life. Beyond its Roman layers, Jerash also shows traces of Byzantine and early Islamic periods, including churches with mosaic floors. Set amid green hills rather than desert, Jerash provides a powerful contrast to Petra and makes for one of the most rewarding historical stops in Jordan.
