Octopus for a Preemie – US is a group of volunteers from across the United States that crochet octopuses for local NICUs.
The purpose of the octopus is to promote the comfort and development of pre-term infants. The tentacles mimic the feel of the umbilical cord in their tiny hands. Octopuses have been found to sooth the babies, improve breathing and heart rate, and help prevent them from pulling on their wires and tubes. This project has had success and support in NICUs around the globe!
